NPD: MW2 shifts 6m copies in November

Activision Blizzard’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has topped US software sales in November, selling 6 million copies in just 19 days.

The latest NPD sales data shows the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions sold 4.2 million and 1.87 million copies respectively, far outselling any other title during the month.

Its closest rival was New Super Mario Bros Wii, which managed to shift 1.39 million units. This was followed by a duo of Xbox 360 titles, with Assassin’s Creed II selling 794,700 copies and Left 4 Dead selling 744,000 copies.

Nintendo took sixth and seventh positions with Wii Sports Resort shifting 720,200 units and Wii Fit Plus selling 679,000 units. Finishing up the Top 10 was Assassin’s Creed on PS3 (448,400), Dragon Age: Origins on 360 (362,100) and Mario Kart Wii (315,000).

While Nintendo boasts the titles in the Top 10, nothing could take away from Call Of Duty’s record-breaking success.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level,” commented NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September 2007 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3’s daily sales rate by 16 per cent in its 19 days at retail in November.

While this year’s top-selling item bested last year’s by 283 per cent, it couldn’t make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5 per cent less units than did the top 50 last year.”
