Fancy the graphics performance of the Titan X for 300 less than the RRP? That seems to be what’s on offer from Nvidia’s latest card, the GTX 780 Ti.
Until now there has been little reason to opt for a GTX 980, with its little brother the GTX 970 offering near comparable performance for around half the price. However, the 980 Ti asks the same question of the current GPU leader the Titan X, which itself was only revealed in March.
Priced at 550 (versus the Titan X’s 870), the 980 Ti is based on the same GM200 Maxwell architecture as the Titan X. Most of the specs are the same, too, although the VRAM drops from 12GB to 6GB and there are slight reductions in the number of CUDA cores and texture units – none of which will likely have much impact on real-world gaming performance.
Nvidia reckons that the card will play the likes of Battlefield 4, Shadow of Mordor and GTA V at 30fps+ at Very High settings. It’s also designed to work with Microsoft’s upcoming DirectX 12.
The GTX 980 Ti will be released worldwide this week.
This month, however, AMD will be unveiling its new GPU lineup. What will the R9 390X have to offer? We don’t know yet, although do expect 4GB of GDDR5-beating HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and a probable launch before the end of the month.
