Inside and Firewatch also big winners

Overwatch takes home Game of the Year award at Game Developers Choice Awards

At last night’s Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony last night, Blizzard Entertainment’s multiplayer shooter Overwatch picked up yet another award, being honoured with a prize for Game of the Year.

They didn’t stop there. Overwatch also picked up an award for Best Design.

Playdead’s Inside and Campo Santo’s Firewatch were also double winners, with Inside grabbing Best Audio and Best Visual Art while Firewatch snagged Best Debut and Best Narrative. No Man’s Sky grabbed an innovator award too in a perhaps controversial move that applauds the new ideas shown by the game.

Meanwhile, Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award for his work with game tool ZZT and Epic’s own Unreal Engine.

The Game Developers Choice Awards are created and voted on only by developers, with winners chosen by the International Choice Awards Network, an invitation-only group made up of leading game creators from every part of the video games industry.

“This year’s amazing slate of winners is a testament to the diversity of experiences in games. Pokemon Go took gaming outdoors using AR, while Job Simulator showed how lo-fi aesthetics could meet cutting edge tech for a winning VR experience. Overwatch once again proved Blizzard’s uncanny ability to make a perfectly balanced multiplayer game, and Inside delved deep into our dark psyches to unearth our scariest nightmares,” said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of the Game Developers Conference, in a statement. “These nominees speak to the strength of games as a medium, but also show the various textures and possible creative outlets that interactive entertainment can provide. Congrats to all of the winners and nominees for following their visions and thanks to all developers who strive to make amazing games for us day in and day out.”
