The popularity of the Sony PlayStation 4 console continues to grow as the Sony Interactive Entertainment announce that the PS4 has cumulatively sold though (to retailers) over 60.40 million units.
That figure is based on retail sales estimates collected in global regions up to June 10th 2017. Sony have also said that software on the platform has sold over 487million copies, both via retail and digital sales.
The cumulative figure doesn’t state exactly how much each iteration of the console has sold but does include the PS4, the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro.
The success of the PlayStation in 2017 has been down to a strong exclusive line up of titles, including the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn.
"We are very grateful for our fans and partners around the globe who have continued to support PS4," said Sony Interactive Entertainment president and global CEO, Andrew House in a statement. "The PS4 platform is in its prime, with the industry’s best lineup of exclusive and partner titles slated to release this year, taking full advantage of the power of the PS4 system. We are committed to further expanding our overall PS4 ecosystem, by broadening the PlayStation VR content portfolio, as well as enriching our network services along with our ground-breaking software lineup. We remain steadfast in bringing the best entertainment experience to users worldwide and making PS4 the best place to play."
Following their press confrece at E3 yesterday, Sony focused on its triple-A titles and partners, with some VR and indie titles shown during the pre-show stream. Sony have tended to focus their attention to their own PlayStation Experience event for showcases and annoucements in the last year, rather than E3.
So where does the PS4 currently sit in the all time list? Well, quite high. It has now outsold the original Xbox, the Nintendo 64, the Genesis/Mega Drive the SNES. It’s also not that far away from outselling the Nintendo 3DS. But it is still not in the top ten.
Sony hold four spots in that particular chart with , its predecessor, the PS3, selling just under 84 million, the PSP having sold around 82 million units and the PlayStation 2 holding the top spot with just under 155 million sales.
