Pokemon Go is the fastest app to reach $1bn gross revenue

Pokmon Go has become the fastest app to surpass $1bn in worldwide gross revenue, according to a new report from data analyst Sensor Tower.

After just seven months on the market, Niantic’s mobile mega hit continues to show up its rivals, earning almost double the revenue of rival title Clash Royale during the same period. According to Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence estimates, Clash Royale, which released in March 2016, grossed approximately $550m in its first seven months, and is only now closing in on the 1bn mark.

Sensor Tower’s head of mobile insights Randy Nelson also predicts that Pokmon Go could easily "leave this $1bn milestone in the dust through additional events and major content updates, such as the long-anticipated Generation 2 Pokmon" by the time the app reaches its on year anniversary this July.

Admittedly, Pokmon Go’s daily revenue has dropped off since its initial launch, with Sensor Tower stating it now makes between $1.5m to $2.5m per day. In late July, it reportedly grossed more than $18m in a single day.

However, as Niantic’s CMO Mike Quigley told MCV last year, the company still has big plans for the app going forward:

There are things we are able to do very efficiently to scale the business so our investors are pretty pleased with the first year of the company, are really bullish on our road map and what we intend to do in the future," Quigley said. "Business is off to a good start for our first year as an independent company and we have high expectations going forwards.”

In addition to it being the fastest app to reach $1bn gross revenue, Pokmon Go was the most downloaded app on iOS in 2016, and it was also last year’s most searched-for term on Google.
