Pokemon Go wins a second BAFTA at British Academy Children’s Awards

After winning one already earlier this year, Niantic has won another BAFTA for their 2016 mobile smash hit, Pokemon Go.

The game won the award for Best Game at the BAFTA Children’s Awards in London on Sunday night beating fellow Pokemon games Pokemon Sun and Moon, ustwo Games’ Monument Valley 2 and Sony’s The Playroom VR.

Pokemon Go won a BAFTA earlier this year at the BAFTA Game Awards, again fending off Pokemon Sun and Moon, The Banner Saga 2, Dawn of Titans, Reigns and Deus Ex GO.

The BAFTA Children’s Awards has long looked at interactive experiences and games with its awards, with the video game category (later shortened to just ‘Game’) starting in 2007. Games such as LittleBigPlanet, Lego Dimensions, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon have all previously won the award.

There is also an ‘Interactive’ category, which highlights both entertainment and educational experiences with Hey Duggee: We Love Animals by Scary Beasties Ltd and BBC Worldwide winning that category this year.

The developer of Pokemon Go, Niantic, recently received new Series B funding of $200 million according to The Wall Street Journal‘s report from Sunday evening and earlier in the month released the news that it will be working with Warner Bros on a new Harry Potter tie-in called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Earlier this month, it also acquired the 3D animation app and developer Evertoon for an undisclosed amount.
