PS Vita price will unlock rapid momentum

Andrew House has told MCV that PlayStation’s Vita is already poised for mainstream success thanks to its attractive price point.

The cheapest version of the device will cost around 229 when it lands. It’s a lower price than expected for the handheld – and for good reason, House said.

To build rapid momentum to the device, we need an aggressive starting price to move quickly from a core technology adopter to a mass market audience.”

The more expensive model (279) includes 3G wireless, but will require a mobile operator contract. In the US, Sony’s partner is AT&T. UK announcements are probably set for Gamescom.

Would a mobile contract lower the price of the unit even further, as with iPhone and companion units like the Xperia Play? We have nothing to announce,” said House.

But there is an opportunity to offer the consumer something extra and add more to the value proposition.”

‘MOVE HAS GOT LEGS’

Microsoft may be banking on Kinect to open up the European market further, but it will face opposition from SCEE.

Region chief Andrew House told MCV: Move has found an easier success in Europe because of the heritage SCEE has built through SingStar and EyeToy. And it has got legs – it’s got lots of other opportunities. Whereas, controller-less gaming [like Kinect] has limits, as we saw with EyeToy.”
