Some retailers are seeing double the number of pre-orders for next-generation consoles as they have for the previous launch, claims Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
While the success or failure of the Xbox One and PS4 are the talk of the industry, there has so far been little evidence to show how either console is doing.
Guillemot’s remarks, made today at Ubisoft’s Q1 2013 earnings call, could be great news for Sony and Microsoft.
"Some retailers – not all of them – are saying their pre-orders are two times what they saw for the last-gen launch," he said.
This means that either minor retailers are getting a bigger piece of the pie, or people are pre-ordering a lot of next-generation consoles.
Guillemot said the retailers he talked to were optimistic, and the man himself was apparently confident enough to talk next generation strategy.
The executive told his investors that the future is in open world games like Assassin’s Creed and FarCry.
He cited the success of games from competitors like Bethesda’s Skyrim and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto as proof of this, and argues that games like the The Crew will give Ubisoft a chance to bring racing game fans their first real taste of an open world in the genre.
