PS4 wins the US monthly sales race again in the US

Sony’s PS4 was the best-selling console in the US in September, marking the fifth successive month it has outsold Xbox One.

That means that PS4 has beaten its rival every month this year with the exception of April. It may be a big ask for Sony to do the same this month, however, with the arrival of Halo 5 on Microsoft’s machine on October 27th.

What will help Sony, however, is the PS4’s recent US and Canadian price cut, meaning both consoles now have a $350 RRP in America.

As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and No.1 in software sales in September,” Sony said. It was also a very strong month for PlayStation Network with September being the highest grossing month in PlayStation Store history.”

Microsoft’s corporate VP of marketing, Mike Nichols added: "Xbox One continued to see strong momentum in September on the heels of Forza Motorsport 6 and EA Sports FIFA 16, with solid year-over-year growth in console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live.”

In the software charts sports ruled supreme, with NBA 2K16, Madden 16, FIFA 16 and NHL 16 monopolising the Top Ten. NPD added: "Thanks to the seven new sports releases launched in September 2015, the sports super genre accounted for 32 per cent of units and 39 per cent of revenue for the month.”

Here’s the September physical console Top Ten in full:

  1. NBA 2K16 (2K Sports)
  2. Madden NFL 16 (EA)
  3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami)
  4. FIFA 16 (EA)
  5. Destiny: The Taken King (Activision)
  6. Super Mario Maker (Nintendo)
  7. Disney Infinity 3.0 (Disney)
  8. Mad Max (Warner Bros)
