MCV looks at the Nintendo's second 3DS Zelda title and Link's new artsy abilities.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is released November 22nd.
A Link Between Worlds is a sequel to A Link to the Past, a smash hit SNES title released in 1992. The game has been re-released several times, including a port on the GameBoy?Advance.
This Link has the ability to turn into a painting, allowing players to find otherwise inaccessible places by traversing walls and going through cracks. l Returning items from Link to the Past include the bow, mallet – giving fans the ability to crush their foes and the Fire Rod – allowing players to start a firestorm.
While the new title is set in the same game world as A Link to the Past, it features all new dungeons, which players can tackle in any order that they choose. In the time between Link to the Past and Link Between Worlds, Hyrule has changed, meaning the map will not be exactly the same.
The world is rendered in stereoscopic 3D and the game runs at 60 frames per second. The 3D effect and the ability to traverse walls as a picture adds a sense of verticality to the game.
The title makes use of both 3DS screens – on the top screen is the game, while the touch screen allows fans to drag and select items from the items menu. This screen also provides a map as well as switching which items are mapped to the X and Y buttons.
Similar to the original Link to the Past, there is a Dark World that mirrors Hyrule. This is not the same Dark World as the original title, but a new one called Lorule, complete with its own Dark Triforce and a version of?Zelda named Hilda.
The game’s soundtrack is comprised of remixes or updated versions of tracks from A Link to the Past.
The Legend of Zelda series started in 1986 with a game of the same name on the NES and has appeared on every Nintendo console since. During its 25 year run, the flagship series has globally sold in the region of 70 million units.
Link and Zelda are not necessarily the same from game to game – the series’ timeline spans thousands of years but always features the same family lines.
Zelda is a fan favourite amoungst Nintendo’s core fans. Titles such as Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and The Wind Waker are heralded as some of the greatest games ever made.
Characters from the series have gone on to appear in other Nintendo games, including the Super Smash Bros series and the Tingle sub-series. The games also spawned an animated series which lasted only 13 episodes.
Nintendo has an upcoming game for the Wii U in the works.
THE?Legend of Zelda series is a cornerstone franchise for us and always performs very positively. We achieved some great results with Ocarina of Time 3D in 2011.
With the increased Nintendo 3DS install base as well as seasonality we are confident in A Link between Worlds being a top seller on Nintendo 3DS. A Link Between Worlds offers the perfect blend of classic top down gameplay made famous by the 1992 Super NES classic A Link to the Past along with many new features and a brand new storyline. Link can now become a drawing to move along walls, allowing a new dimension when solving the fresh set of puzzles on offer.
Other new aspects include greater freedom to tackle the various dungeons in the order you want, while many of the most essential items at Link’s disposal will be available early on at a shop run by the character Ravio, who’ll let you rent or buy items before embarking on your next dungeon. It is this mix of new and old which will excite Legend of Zelda fans as well as offer an entry point for newcomers to the series.
To mark the release of Link Between Worlds, Nintendo are releasing a special edition 3DS XL which is embossed with both the light and dark Triforces from the game and will speak to Legend of Zelda fans everywhere.
Prima are going to be releasing a Link Between Worlds collector’s edition hardback game guide embossed with the crest of Hyrule. This is in addition to the Legend of Zelda Box Set, which includes six hardcover guides for recent Zelda games, including Ocarina of Time 3D, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. The box comes in a Zelda style treasure chest.
