Publisher plots Asia expansion to help turn around its fortunes

Rovio appoints new chief commercial officer

Rovio has appointed Alex Lambeek as its new chief commercial officer.

Lambeek has previously worked at Fox International Channels, where he headed sales for TV channels including Fox Sports, Movies and National Geographic for the Asia Pacific region.

At Rovio, he is being tasked with helping the Angry Birds outfit expand into new markets, such as Asia, and turn around the company’s fortunes.

“We are delighted that Alex has joined us,” said Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala.

“The next few years are very exciting as we have a number of transformational projects planned and having someone on board with Alex’s experience will be invaluable.”

Last year Rovio announced that its profits for 2013 had dropped by more than half from the previous year to £22.2m.

In October, the publisher laid off around 130 staff at its Finland HQ – a figure later revised down. At the time, Rovio’s Mikael Hed said the company had been expanding on the assumption of faster growth “than has materialised”.

In December the firm made as many as 110 staff redundant and closed its Tampere office.
