£40,000 purse for building a â??2014 Commonwealthâ?? online game

Scottish govt on hunt for student dev

The Scottish Government has set aside £40,000 for one game studio and one lucky student to build an online browser game.

A government arm called the ‘Glasgow 2014 Strategic Group’ wants to place a game on its website in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Glasgow.

A contest is now underway among higher education students across Scotland, of which the winner will partner with an unknown games studio to build the game.

The game “should be designed to be played in 2D, with vector based scalable graphics and simple music and sound effects, as well as be playable through either a keyboard or a single-button mouse”, according to news site The Drum.

The deadline for student entries is 16 December. A winner will be announced mid-January.
