After an unsuccessful first stage for the Shanghai Dragons in the Overwatch League regular season, the team has taken full advantage of the player signing window and bolstered its ranks with four new players. These young pros all have impressive records and could be just what the team needs to flip its lacklustre record to date.

Those new players are He “Sky” Junjian, Kim “Geguri” Se-Yeon, Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok and Chon “Ado” Gi-Hyeon, each of whom have proven themselves to be top level Overwatch players. Geguri in particular is considered to be the “world’s best Zarya” player, at one point having an 80 per cent win rate on the hero on the Korean server. She is also the first female player to take part in the Overwatch League.

Female representation in esports is an ongoing issue and we can only hope that the visibility given to Geguri in the Overwatch League will show more young women players, across all games, that this is a valid career route. Especially since the OWL is enjoying strong viewer numbers.

The Shanghai Dragons management is also working on a “player selection policy for Chinese players”, which it hopes to have in place before the start of Season two. This will allow for a “transparent and comprehensive selection method, which will guarantee a fair and just selection process for the opportunity to compete on a global esports stage”.
