Smurfs Village to topple Angry Birds?

Capcom’s Smurf’s Village could soon overtake Angry Birds in the iOS charts as the game that generates the most revenue.

Rovio’s bird-catapulting best-seller is still top of the charts on both iPhone and iPad, but Capcom’s FarmVille-esque title has risen to second place on the former, according to Gamasutra.

Unlike Angry Birds, which depends almost entirely on the purchase price, Smurf’s Village is free to download but allows players to purchase Smurfberries to accelerate their progress.

Prices for this content ranges from 2.99 to 59.99. It’s a business model that has proved to be particularly successful for Capcom Interactive – the publisher’s mobile division. The firm recently told MCV that freemium games such as these are drawing consumers away from dedicated handhelds.
