The PS4 will soon see a very special special edition variant of the Pro launch, with Sony keen to celebrate the massive milestone of over 500 million PlayStations sold.
The special edition console will cost £449.99 and features a two terabyte internal hard drive – the first time a PlayStation console has featured HDD capacity that high as standard. As statement from Sony said: “the Limited Edition PS4™Pro is a thank you to all the fans who have supported and enjoyed entertainment on the platform.”
The original PlayStation launched in Japan back in December of 1994, and while the new console is to celebrate the 500 million mark, PlayStation sales across all devices actually hit 525.3 million – 81.2 million of them being PS4s.
50,000 of the translucent blue special edition units will be manufactured and released for sale to the public, which is sure to end up doing good business for eBay. The special edition 500 million Dualshock 4 (£54.99) and ‘Gold Wireless Headeset 500 Million Edition’ (£77.99) will be available separately, so you won’t have to buy an entire console to join in the festivities. Pre-orders open online on August 14, at 10am.
A statement on the SIE site from John Kodera, SIE President and CEO, read: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the continued support from our fans and business partners, who have all contributed to PlayStation’s rich history. Without our passionate community, we would not have been able to surpass this remarkable milestone of 500 million units.
“PlayStation®4 Pro 500 Million Limited Edition has been created to represent our appreciation to our loyal fans. We will continue to make PlayStation the best place to play for all, as does our continued commitment to expanding our library of great games and variety of network services.”
