Sony buys Sucker Punch

Sony has announced it has acquired Infamous and Sly Cooper studio Sucker Punch Productions for an undisclosed fee.

The Washington-based developer – which has around 75 employees – attracted Sony with its successful range of PS3-exclusive titles, reports Reuters. Sony already owned the rights to most of the studio’s IP.

[Sucker Punch produces] high quality, profitable products over a long period of time,” said senior VP of SCE Worldwide Studios Scott Rohde.

Sucker Punch’s managing partner Brian Fleming added: When you’re an independent little guy with one little project, with every game, you are risking your life and livelihood. This will help us creatively to be less inhibited.”

Earlier this year Infamous 2 was released in the UK to strong acclaim. The developer has also produced a series of Sly Cooper platformer games.

SCE bought LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule in March 2010. Globally SCE has 2,700 employees and 16 studios.
