Sony gets Hotz’ PayPal records

A US magistrate has given Sony the right to subpoena PayPal for the personal account details of PS3 hacker George ‘geohotz’ Hotz.

The platform holder hopes to discover the identity of any companies or individuals who may have helped fund the activities of Hotz between January 2009 and February 2011.

The information will play a key part in the decision about whether Sony can sue Hotz in San Francisco or, as Hotz would prefer, in New Jersey.

It’s the latest development in an ongoing legal triage against the computer whizz following the leading role he played in the breaking of PS3’s security systems at the end of last year.

Sony has already subpoenaed YouTube, Google and Twitter for personal account information.
