More than 47.4m PlayStation consoles have now been shipped to retailers worldwide, Sony has revealed.
That’s according to the firm’s financials for the quarter ending September 30th, which reveal that 3.9m PS4 machines were shipped during the month. Adding that to the previously-announced 43.5m shipment figure.
To emphasise – this is machines Sony has shipped, not consoles sold to consumers. At last official count, 40m PlayStation 4s had been sold to gamers. That information was released back in May.
That’s actually a decrease of 0.1m units year-on-year, though it’s likely that sales have slowed due to some consumers waiting for the upcoming and more powerful PlayStation 4 Pro. This quarter does, however, include the launch of the newer slim PS4 SKU.
While the company is yet to announce sales figures for PlayStation VR, the firm has said that sales are ‘on track’. Revenue from PSN rose 31 per cent year-on-year.
Sony’s Game and Network Services division saw a 11.3 per cent decrease in sales to 319.9bn (2.5bn) year-on-year. Operating income too dipped 4.9bn (38m) to 19bn (148m). The firm chalks this up to currency fluctuations, as well as the reduction in price for the PS4.
The year-on-year decrease in sales was mainly due to the appreciation of the yen,” CFO Kenichiro Yoshida said.
The current quarter was a period during which our hardware was changing due to the launch of a new model of PS4 in September. The year-on-year decrease in operating income was primarily due to the price cut of the new PS4 model. The negative impact on operating income of the price cut was partially offset by continued cost reductions, but operating income for the segment decreased due to the residual impact of decreased PS3 software sales.
However, the strong momentum of the business continues, as is shown in the 31 per cent year-on-year increase in network revenues. The sales of PS VR, which was launched in October, are on track. Furthermore, this month, we plan to launch the PS4 Pro, a high value-added model.”
