Sony reveals its virtual reality Project Morpheus headset

Virtual reality is coming to PS4.

Sony at GDC overnight revealed its much-rumoured virtual reality headset, which for the time being is codenamed Project Morpheus.

The unit, which works with PS4, displays in 1080p, has a 90-degree field of view and boasts full 360 degree head tracking. It uses the PlayStation Camera for orientation although is designed to keep working even if the camera loses sight of it.

The device is also able to emulate over 60 virtual speakers and provides full 3D audio, although it will also support custom headphones.

Those concerned about the isolationist elements of the helmet can also output the display to a TV – it will be a traditional display, too, and not the binocular twin-image view commonly associated with VR tech.

The TV output also allows for elements of asymmetrical gameplay. PlayStation Move compatibility is also confirmed.

It was at GDC shown off with two games – Oculus Rift launch title Eve Valkyrie and Square Enix’s Thief, along with two Sony produced demos.

Project Morpheus remains in prototype and is yet to receive a release window or price

At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play,” SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida stated.

Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we’re looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators.”

Here are the current specs, which Sony stresses could still be subject to change:
