Sony sells huge Square Enix share stake

PlayStation platform holder Sony has sold off the 9.5m shares it held in Square Enix.

CVG reports that prior to the sale Sony was Square’s third largest shareholder. It had owned the stake for over ten years. Interestingly, despite having a value of around $157m, Sony sold off the stock for just $47m.

After years as a Nintendo-centric publisher, Square Enix for a long period developed a host of its key titles exclusively for PlayStation platforms such as Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII, as well as the Kingdom Hearts games.

Despite also being released on PC, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII were also both PlayStation console exclusives.

However, as of 2009’s Final Fantasy XIII the company transitioned to a broader, non-exclusive approach.
