Sony sold 5.9m PS4 over the holidays – pushing global total to 73.6m

Christmas 2017 was not as jolly as the previous one for Sony. The platform holder announced that it has sold 5.9m PS4 consoles worldwide between the end of November and December 31st 2017. This figure include both PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles and is a slight decrease compared to last year’s performance.

During the same period in 2016, Sony sold 6.2m PS4 units. The Christmas 2017 sales are still really healthy and allowed for the console to reach cumulative sales of 73.6m units worldwide as of December 31st (which is above what IHS predicted back in June).

Sony also announced that 55.9m PS4 games were sold during the 2017 holiday season – both physically and digitally. As of December 31st, the platform had sold a grand total of 645m games since launch in 2013.

PlayStation Plus also reached 31.5m users during Christmas, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera said in a statement, adding that it has demonstrated “spectacular growth.” He also said that the PS Store recorded “its largest-ever monthly sales of content in December 2017.”

Kodera also commented: “Thanks to the continued support from our fans across the globe, we are honored to announce remarkable sales during the holiday season.”

He added: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community and our partners for helping us achieve such phenomenal milestones. We promise our unwavering commitment to bring more amazing experiences to our fans, including exclusive games and innovative network services, as PS4 continues to flourish as the best place to play.”
