Sony targeting December launch for PS4 in China, report claims

The PS4 could launch in China in just two months, according to a new report.

The machine is without an official release date in the territory but Bloomberg says that Sony plans to start packaging the console from December with the intention of selling 200,000 machines annually.

Documents detailing the numbers have been confirmed as being authentic.

Sony announced its intention to launch in China back in May, although it was not known at the time whether it would focus efforts on PS4 or on legacy hardware. Nintendo, for instance, has suggested that it will design new affordable hardware rather than try and sell premium-priced machines in the region.

Sony has already established two joint ventures in China’s free trade zone – one for hardware production and one for software, and owns a 70 per cent and 49 per cent stake respectively in each business.

Xbox One was launched in China last month with reported sales of 100k in its first week. Microsoft’s projections aim for 1m unit sales in its first year.

A survey in July suggested that PS4 is attracting more buyer interest in the region than Xbox One.
