Lara Croft GO named best iOS game, but Ellen Degeneres and Mojang lead sales in 2015

Square Enix Montreal wins Apple’s Game of The Year

The Apple editorial team has listed the best apps and games for the year, with Square Enix Montreal’s Lara Croft GO leading the way.

“Tomb Raider’s puzzler spin-off floored us with its beauty and clever design,” the team writes on iTunes’ Best of 2015 page.

Meanwhile, RAC7 Games’ audio-only game Dark Echo won the title of Most Innovative.

The two games beat competition from Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter, Ubisoft’s Rayman Adventures and Joel McDonald’s Prune, which were all named runners up.

We recently spoke to Square Enix Montreal about the making of Lara Croft GO. You can read the full post-mortem here.

It’s important to clarify that these are the editorial team’s choices. The charts showing the most successful iOS games of 2015 are a different story.

The top Paid game was actually Heads Up!, a party game devised by TV presenter and Finding Nemo voice actress Ellen Degeners, followed by the Premier League’s Fantasy Football app and Mojang’s Minecraft: Pocket Edition. In the Top Free apps, the highest ranked game is Hipster Whale’s endless hopper Crossy Road at No.6.

The Top Grossing apps present a more predictable picture. Supercell’s dominating Clash of Clans remains on top, followed by King duo Candy Crush Sada and Candy Crush Soda Saga. Machine Zone’s Game of War: Fire Age rounds off the Top Five.
