Valve adds new revenue model to digital distribution platform

Steam now supports subscription games

The popular digital distribution platform Steam now supports auto-renewing subscriptions.

Valve has had subscription MMOs for sale on the platform for years, but in the past the subscription fees were handled seperately.

The first title to take advantage of the system is Adventurine’s Darkfall Unholy Wars, priced at $40 which includes the first month’s subscription fee.

After the first month users will be charged an automatically renewing $15, which can be cancelled at any time.

It remains to be seen how many other companies will take advantage of the system, which is losing ground to the more fashionable free-to-play model already available on Steam.
