Street Fighter X Tekken to push genre forwards

A crossover of the much-loved Tekken and Street Fighter series will keep the beat ‘em up genre fresh.

That’s according to Capcom and Namco, who last week announced they will join forces for two 360/PS3 games that merge the franchises.

The publishers claim the new games – one handled by Capcom and the other by Namco Bandai – will give the genre a much-needed shot in the arm. The games will ride momentum generated by recent hits SFIV and Tekken 6.

A few years ago, it looked like fighters were consigned to the past generations of consoles,” said Capcom’s head of marketing for UK and Europe Stuart Turner.

But over the past few years, thanks to the likes of Super Street Fighter IV and Tekken 6 smashing up the charts, new life has been breathed into a genre many believed was already dead.

With Capcom and Namco coming together in Street Fighter X Tekken, we hope that we will produce a true celebration of the genre, pushing it onto even greater things.”

Street Fighter X Tekken was unveiled at Comic-Con in San Diego to consumer acclaim.

It’s an historic announcement – what’s not to be excited about?” commented Namco Bandai’s marketing and PR manager Lee Kirton. The two biggest fighting franchises have finally come together, which can only raise the appeal of both these legends.

After the reaction from fans at Comic-Con, I think that this is one of the biggest gaming announcements ever.”

Turner added: It’s nice to finally be able to talk about Street Fighter X Tekken and share the excitement with the wider world.

The reaction has been nothing short of incredible.”
