Sumo Digital has announced it is opening a new studio in Leamington Spa, UK, that will focus on the development of games for mobile devices.
Chris Southall – who "has an extensive track record in the industry" and had previously held leadership roles at Sega and Codemasters – will be applying his expertise in producing free-to-play and mobile games as studio director.
"Building this new studio, with a clear focus on mobile development is very exciting," Southall said. "I’ve long been a fan of Sumo so am thrilled by the opportunity to both create something new here and to be joining a group of talented studios."

"Chris has a well-deserved reputation throughout the industry as an inspirational leader who’s delivered outstanding results. I’m delighted that he is to build and direct our new team in Leamington Spa."
Following the acquisition of Red Kite Games earlier this month, the absorption of Newcastle studio CCP Games in January 2018, and The Chinese Room in August 2018, Sumo Digital – which was founded in 2003 – now employs 500+ staff across six studios in Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Brighton (The Chinese Room), Pune in India, and Red Kite’s base in Huddersfield.
"I am a great believer in enabling people to succeed and the last thing I would do is say ‘stop working the way you’ve been working and now work this way because that’s how we do it in Sheffield’. At the same time, you learn from each other," MD Porter told MCV last year. "I’m sure Sheffield and Nottingham will learn from Newcastle and vice-versa. We’re now a sum that’s greater than the individual parts – but that’s not by implementing a regime that says everyone must do it this way."
