The Last Guardian still "absolutely in the mix"

Sony Studios’ Scott Rohde has given the strongest hint yet that The Last Guardian very much lives on.

We’re not going to announce what platform it’s coming on, who’s working on it or who’s involved,” he told IGN. But that is still a title that’s absolutely in the mix at Worldwide Studios.

I actually like talking about The Last Guardian. I love that people are still interested in it. That’s an honour to us. That’s not just me spinning. It’s really cool that people are still interested in it, and we’re trying to make the best thing we can out of The Last Guardian.

We want to make great games. And when we see that the public is so interested in a specific game, of course that drives us to want to complete that game. But it also drives us to want to make it great. We would not want to ship that game if we don’t think it’s great.”

All of which suggests it’s a PS4 title now, right? But perhaps not courtesy of Team Ico?

Serious questions started being asked about the long-delayed game back in 2011 when dev boss Fumito Ueda quit Team Ico. Two months later Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida admitted that the game faced some very difficult challenges”.

By the end of 2012 it became clear that even a 2013 release couldn’t be guaranteed and at E3 last year outgoing SCEA boss Jack Tretton claimed the game was on hiatus”.

However, Yoshida re-affirmed in the summer that development remained ongoing and Sony was waiting for the right time to re-announce” the title.
