Naughty Dog has said that disc space, as opposed to hardware limitations, are proving the biggest challenge for PS4 title The Last of Us: Remastered.
The PS3 original used a host of tricks such as swapping out the high-quality character models used for cut scenes with lower-details versions for gameplay. The PS4 release will use the higher quality assets more frequently, but that comes at a cost.
"We didn’t build it with high assets in mind to then port it, but it did give us a leg up," creative director Neil Druckmann told Edge magazine, as reported by CVG. "If we hadn’t done that, we might not have made the call to bring it over to PS4.
"Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60fps, and that involved rendering them all from scratch. It’s interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is ‘Can we fit all this on the disc?’"
The Last of Us Remastered was officially announced for PS4 last month. Naughty Dog has said that it is looking into ways to offer the game at a discount for those who have previously purchased it for PS3.
