The League of Legends World Championship prize pool has passed $5 million

The prize pool for the League of Legends World Championship has passed the $5 million mark and continues to grow, despite the competition being over.

Just before the grand final between SK Telecom T1 and Samsung Galaxy kicked off, Riot Games announced that, thanks to crowdfunding, the prize pool both teams were playing for had reached a total of $5,070,00.

This meant that the team that walked away victorious, which we won’t spoil here, took home more than $2 million.

The first crowdfunding drive in League of Legends saw 25% of all purchases of the Championship Zed skin and the Championship Ward directly added to the prize pool. The base prize pool was around the $2 million mark, meaning the prize pool has been doubled since the crowdfunding started in September.

Weirdly the end of the tournament itself does not mean the end of the prize pool growth, as sales of the skin and ward will still contribute to the final prize pool until November 6th. Riot will announce the final prize pool and the exact monetary winnings of each team shortly after.
