The scribes behind Tomb Raider, Mirror's Edge, Overload, Heavenstrike Rivals, Hatoful Boyfriend and more discuss advances in video game storytelling

The MCV & Develop Podcast: Writing for games, with Rhianna Pratchett and Ed Fear

For the fifth episode of The MCV & Develop Podcast, we are joined by two experienced writers from the video gaming world.

Ed Fear is currently the lead writer at London-based studio Mediatonic, where he has penned the plot behind Heavenstrike Rivals and assisted with the translation of pigeon dating sim Hatoful Boyfriend. Rhianna Pratchett, meanwhile, is the multi-award winning author behind Overlord, Mirror’s Edge and the acclaimed Tomb Raider reboots.

Mere hours after their talk at Develop:Brighton, they joined editors Chris Dring and James Batchelor to discuss the delicate art of comedy, pacing and creating tension in video games, engaging players with the narrative behind MMOs and large online games, and more.

The episode was recorded in Brighton – hence the irremovable sound of seagulls, for which we apologise.

You can listen to the show below, or download it for later. Alternatively you can find it on iTunes, Stitcher, Pocket Casts, Overcast, Player FM and more.
