UK CHARTS: Modern Warfare 3 resists new release rivals

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has resisted an avalanche of new releases to remain at No.1 in the UKIE Gfk Chart-Track All Formats Top 40.

It does so despite an 87 per cent week-on-week decline in sales.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations was the strongest newcomer, debuting at No.2. Its week one numbers better those of predecessor Brotherhood by four per cent in unit terms and eight per cent in revenue, making it the best performing title both in the series and in Ubisoft’s history to date.

Interestingly, 61 per cent of the game’s sales occurred in the first 24 hours which, unusually for a UK, was on a Tuesday.

THQ’s Saints Row: The Third enters the charts in 4th, beating the week one sales of Saints Row 2 by 43 per cent.

Two other games made the Top Ten this week, both of which are from Nintendo. Wii adventure outing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword debuts at number seven while 3DS platformer Super Mario 3D Land manages ninth.

EA’s Need for Speed: The Run fails to penetrate the Top Ten in its first week of release – a highly unusual failure for the huge racing IP.

The other Top 40 new entries are LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 (13th), Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (20th)and Kinect Disneyland Adventures (39th).
