Unity now boasts over two million registered users, which CEO David Helgason claims makes it the most used game engine in the world.

Just a year ago the middleware had one million users, and doubling that in just twelve months is definitely a testament to the popularity of the Unity game engine.

To celebrate, Unity will give one random developer a “full all-expenses-paid trip” to the Unite 2013 conference in Vancouver as well as a free Unity Pro license complete with all Pro commercial add-ons.

“Getting to a million developers was an extraordinary achievement,” said Helgason on the Unity Blog..

“Now, it’s clear that Unity is by far the most used game engine in the world, and simply one of the biggest software development platforms of any kind… yes, I mean in “the category that contains C++, Python, Ruby-on-Rails”.

Unity is nothing if not easy to use, and this accessibility combined with its free licensing has aided the company in advertising itself as helping to ‘democratize game development’.

“That’s why we recently made deployment to iOS and Android completely free for individual developers and small companies, and we are doing the same thing with our upcoming Blackberry 10 Windows Phone and Windows Store build options,” explained Helgason.

“Plus, we will make the full Pro add-on for Windows free for Unity Pro users when it’s ready for release (soon!).”

Unity has also taken a page from the playbook of other major software companies by introducing a subscription model that makes a Unity Pro license available for $75 a month as compared to the $1,500 one-time purchase.
