UPDATE: PS4 India launch in 2013 uncertain; pricing announcement closer to launch

Update: PlayStation Middle East has confirmed to IGN that the PlayStation 4 will launch in the GCC (Gulf Coperation Council) region this holiday season. It is likely then that the PS4 will also arrive in India at the same time.

Original story: A 2013 launch for the PlayStation 4 in India is no longer a certainty, Sony Computer Entertainment India country manager Atindriya Bose has told MCV.

Bose said that with the PS4 launching in Europe on 29th November, getting the console to India within a month would be a logistical challenge.

That’s the part that is being evaluated. So [I] cannot confirm 2013 immediately as that is almost within a month of the EU launch date. With country logistics and certain regulatory requirements, it looks a pretty tight call,” Bose said.

The PS4 will launch in November in 32 countries across North America, Europe and Latin America, but India has not been included on that list.

Bose had earlier said that the Indian price for the PS4 would be announced before or at Gamescom, but the Indian Rupee has once again put a damper on proceedings.

Pricing for all (PS4, PS3 and PS Vita ) now very strongly depends on the foreign exchange rate scenario of India, which puts considerable pressure on the pricing,” Bose added.

The Rupee currently stands at an all-time low of €85 and almost $63.50, and the constantly falling Rupee is making it difficult for Sony to nail down a price.

Bose said that while Sony had some time to wait and see if the Rupee can recover before finalising the price for the PS4, the PS Vita and PS3 may not have that luxury.

On the PS4, we have some time to wait for a more stable (and hopefully better) scenario and declare price much closer to launch date. For PS3 and PS Vita, [we] may need to consider the immediate impact of foreign exchange rates before we can decide the India price points.”

We’ll have more details on PS4 launch details for India during the course of Gamescom, including (hopefully) an insight from SCEE CEO Jim Ryan.
