US: High-end PS3 sales match low-spec machines

Following a strong sales period in the US that has seen the $500 80GB PS3 sell just as many units as the lower spec $400 40GB model, SCEA’s Scott Steinberg has stated that the perceived value of the machine means a price cut may not be necessary.

Speaking to Reuters, Steinberg stated: "We’re seeing that the hard-core gamer is not afraid to throw another $100 at the PS3 because the value proposition is so rich.

"We’re still in the phase of studying what this means for the potential roadmap for the year.” When asked if this meant the price pressure put on the firm that many had spoke of might not materialise, he answered: "It’s leading us to think so.

"The year of the PS3 started in fall 2007, I think it will be an extended year. We are feeling positive momentum."
