US: PlayStation sales 30% up on targets

Sales of both the PS3 and PSP are almost a third higher than Sony had estimated in its year-to-date predictions, SCEA boss Jack Tretton has stated.

Reuters reports that the US arm of Sony is now very confident that it will meet, or even exceed, its estimations despite the global economic downturn. The numbers it is aiming for are 10 million PS3 and 15 million PSP sales by the end of its financial year in March 2009.

We are in good shape for that number worldwide,” Tretton stated. We are tracking at 100 per cent up over last year, about 30 per cent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number.

I’d say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending. I think people are going to question every dollar that they spend, but they are going to look for value in return.”
