Valve releases free VR creation tool Destinations

Valve has launched a free tool allowing users to produce photorealistic levels and worlds in virtual reality.

Destinations is built around Valve’s own Source 2 engine toolset and utilises photogrammetry assets, which translates real-world photos into explorable 3D environments and interactive objects.

Levels made with Destinations can be shared through Steam Workshop and played on any OpenVR headset, including the HTV Vive and Oculus Rift. Motion and x-input controllers – such as the Steam Controller – are also supported.

The software comes with documentation and sample worlds, including an example starter map to provide users with a way to learn how to add interactivity to their creation.

Destinations is the second such VR tool released by Valve in as many weeks, after the company made the renderer used in VR mini-game collection The Lab freely available for Unity last week.
