Open world games are verging on ubiquitous these days, and Epic Games has created a tech demo to show how its game engine handles such titles.
The short film, which you can watch below, shows a young boy chasing his kite across a rural landscape, and was shown to GDC attendees during the firm’s State of Unreal event.
The demo was captured in a build with 100 square miles of open terrain, and Epic is keen to stress that everything in the film appears as it would in a finished game.
“Everything in the Kite demo is running in real time in Unreal Engine 4 at 30fps,” said CTO Kim Libreri. “In addition to our new open world features, you’re seeing fully dynamic direct and indirect illumination, cinematic quality depth of field and motion blur, PBR photo modelled assets and procedural asset placement.”
