VideoGamer, Eurogamer and Simon Parkin win big at Games Media Awards 2015

The UK’s greatest journalists have once again picked up top awards at the2015 Games Media Awards.

Simon Parkin claimed two awards for his work, in both the Features Writer and Mainstream Voice categories.

"I love writing, I love stories and this is the best industry to be writing about," Parkin said at the culmination of an emotional speech.

Eurogamer also won big, winning Editorial Team of the Year – Online, while deputy editor Wesley Yin-Poole was praised for his news writing.

"I want to thank the Eurogamer team, particularly the people who work with me on news," Yin-Poole said, before quipping: "I’d also like to thank Destiny."

VideoGamer claimed the highly coveted Video Team award, thanks to its recent work on entertainment video production.

The team’s Simon Miller arrived on-stage in character as The Miller Report’s Simon Miller equipped with a wrestling belt, before Jim Trinca feigned knocking him unconscious with the belt.

"Alright you chuffsters," Miller teased before being knocked out. "Who else were you going to vote for?"

In the new categories, Andy Kelly was named top YouTuber for his Other Places series of videos, while ReseroNetwork was praised for its streaming capability.

"As someone who has written for a magazine for 11 years it’s good to be recognised as the world’s best YouTuber," he joked.

Meanwhile, GameSpot’s Kate Gray was highlighted as the industry’s Rising Star, and took the opportunity to praise the other competitors in the category.

"Have you seen all the names on there?" she asked. "Fuck. Thank you. I just want to thank my fellow nominees in Rising Star. Thank you."

Sponsors of this year’s event included Capcom (Gold Sponsor) Xbox (Online Editorial Team Sponsor), Sega (Rising Star), Green Man Gaming/Playfire (Players’ Choice), 2K and Gamescom (both Event Partners).

The Journalists’ Journalist award was voted for on the night by media attendees of the ceremony, and was this year claimed by The Miller Report’s Simon Miller.

"A great man once said: ‘If you don’t know the score, you don’t know the truth’," Miller began, quoting himself. "But these are powerful words. I want to thank my parents, because they popped me out."

Miller then earnestly thanked the crowd for the award, saying: "We only set up The Miller Report as a weekly thing. If I had known it would become this thing I would’ve never called it The Miller Report. Thank you very much for this."

Players’ Choice was decided by consumers via the PlayFire website, who selected the Explosive Alan Live Podcast as their favourite games media content of the last year.

"Thank you very much to those who voted for us," the team said. "Thanks to all those who listened to the podcast but it’s redundant isn’t it; they’re all brilliant. Thank you."
