Wii Play tops ten-year sales charts

Nintendo’s Wii Play, which comes bundled with the WiiMote, is the best selling game of the 21st century in North America, according to new NPD data.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas stands as the second most popular title of the decade, with sales totalling 8.25m units. Third place is occupied by Wii Fit, which is catching Rockstar’s title fast with sales to date numbering 7.9m units.

GTA: Vice City sits in fourth with 6.9m sales whilst Mario Kart Wii is fifth with 6.7m.

With sales of both Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii still going strong, the likelihood is that Nintendo will before the end of the year lay claim to the top three best selling North American games this decade.

I really think it’s been about the breadth of appeal and changing the way that people think about videogames,” Nintendo America’s executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway told IGN.

So, for long time players like yourself, I think there’s a real appreciation of what this represented as innovation in the category. And for non-gamers, it disrupted a perception that videogames aren’t active.”
