Yahoo Esports is shutting its doors this Friday, on June 16th, as Verizon brings Yahoo and AOL together in a merger, mashing the two former internet giants together into a new company, Oath.
It seems that in the restructure, Yahoo Esports didn’t make the cut, with Travis Gafford writing: “Unfortunately, Yahoo Esports will no longer be updated after this Friday (June 16th). As Yahoo Sports becomes part of Oath, they are focusing on aligning with the new company strategy and are focused on growing the Yahoo Sports brand.”

The esports dedicated website was launched in March 2016, and had quickly assembled a team of popular esports writers, who have all now been released from their contracts as part of the site’s closure.
Verizon acquired Yahoo for a measly $4.48b, and according to Gafford, the Oath merger didn’t leave space for the esports website.
News on a business website means occasionally I have to report on the redundancies of friends and in some cases colleagues, but in this case I’d like to take this paragraph to wish the former Yahoo Esports team all the best with what’s next.
